A meeting highlighted the need for the general public to enhance participation in the ongoing endeavors towards reducing death and disability resulting from road accidents.

Asmara, 11 June 2011 –  A meeting highlighted the need for the general public to enhance participation in the ongoing endeavors towards reducing death and disability resulting from road accidents.

In the meeting held today focusing on road traffic safety, Advisor of the Minister in the Health Ministry, Dr. Mismai Gebrehiwet, stated that the Health Ministry, in collaboration with Ministry of Transport and Communications, is making the necessary preparations to draw up action plan for 2011-2020 aimed at minimizing death and disability resulting from traffic accidents.

The 10-year action plan comprises various components, including road safety management, ensuring the safety of vehicles and pedestrians, guaranteeing medical emergency service after accidents and others.

Likewise, the WHO Country Representative in Eritrea, Dr. Idris Sowu, noted the significance of the envisaged action plan and stressed the need for joint efforts towards combating road accidents.

Also in a seminar conducted yesterday at the NCEW Hall, the director general of health service in the Health Ministry, Mr. Berhane Gebretinsae, outlined the negative impact of traffic accidents on human life and socio-economic domains.

Meanwhile, kindergarten and elementary students conducted demonstration in Asmara downtown chanting different slogans regarding road traffic safety.  (Source: shabait.com 2011-06-11)
